Leung Chai-yan, the second daughter of former Hong Kong Chief Executive and current vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Leung Chun-ying, was found unconscious in a serviced apartment unit in Shau Kei Wan on the evening of 8 April. Paramedics arrived at the scene but pronounced her dead at the age of 33.
Leung Chun-ying confirmed his daughter’s passing in a poignant Facebook post today at around 5 a.m.. In the post, he wrote, “Chai-yan is gone. She left us very suddenly, without a single word, lying peacefully in bed. Just a few days ago, she proactively went to get a flu shot. We are grateful for the police and forensic team’s investigation, which has so far ruled out suicide or any suspicious circumstances. We appreciate the care, understanding, and condolences from friends during this most difficult time for our family.”
According to police statements to the media, a staff member from a serviced apartment located at 1 A Kung Ngam Road reported the incident at 10:40 p.m. on April 8, suspecting that a 33-year-old woman surnamed Leung had fainted in one of the units. Emergency responders found her lying on the bed and confirmed her death at the scene. The cause of death remains pending an autopsy, and the case has been classified as a “body discovery” for further investigation.
In the early hours of April 9, Leung Chun-ying, accompanied by plainclothes police officers, entered the apartment building around 1 a.m. to gather details. Leung Chung-yan, Chai-yan’s younger sister, also arrived at the scene shortly after midnight and departed in the early morning.
At approximately 2:45 a.m., two forensic officers entered the building, likely to conduct a preliminary examination of the deceased’s body. By 5 a.m., mortuary workers arrived and transported Leung Chai-yan’s body to the morgue.
Further updates on the investigation and the official cause of death are expected following the completion of the autopsy.
