Hong Kong ushered in 2025 with a dazzling fireworks display over Victoria Harbour and the joyful arrival of four newborns, symbolizing a year of new beginnings and opportunities. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, in his New Year's address, outlined a vision for Hong Kong focused on integration with mainland China, innovation, and global connectivity.
Recognizing the dynamic global landscape, Lee emphasized the importance of adapting to change and proactively seizing opportunities. "Hong Kong will have to embrace changes and take initiatives to align with mainland China’s strategic development," he stated, highlighting the crucial role of closer ties with the mainland in driving the city's future growth.
A key component of this strategy is the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone in Lok Ma Chau Loop. Set to become operational this year, the co-developed zone is poised to transform Hong Kong into a leading international innovation and technology (I&T) hub. By attracting top talent, fostering cutting-edge research, and driving the development of strategic industries, Hetao will serve as a powerful engine for economic growth.
Beyond integration, Lee stressed the importance of expanding Hong Kong's global reach. His administration is committed to forging stronger ties with new international markets, enhancing the city's influence on the world stage, and promoting cross-border collaboration.
Lee also addressed the needs of Hong Kong residents, highlighting initiatives aimed at improving well-being and quality of life. The launch of the city's first traditional Chinese medicine hospital, the provision of 9,500 "light public housing" flats, and the creation of additional community spaces are all part of a broader effort to enhance the lives of Hong Kong citizens.
The Chief Executive's message paints a picture of a Hong Kong embracing both change and opportunity. By integrating with mainland China's development, fostering innovation through the Hetao zone, and strengthening international ties, Hong Kong is positioning itself for a future of continued prosperity and global prominence. The focus on improving residents' well-being further underscores the government's commitment to building a brighter future for all in Hong Kong.
