On October 13, 2024, Macau concluded its Chief Executive election, with the sole candidate, Sam Ho Fai, winning overwhelming support. Garnering 394 votes from the 400-member Election Committee, Sam Ho Fai will become the sixth Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region.
The Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, officially declared the election results, confirming Sam Ho Fai’s position as the new Chief Executive. As a former President of the Court of Final Appeal, Sam Ho Fai is set to lead Macau for the next five years.
Upon his election, Sam Ho Fai expressed gratitude to the Election Committee for their support. He vowed to diligently uphold his duties and ensure Macau's stability and prosperity. In his acceptance speech, he stated:
"I will unite and lead all sectors of society and the general public, enhancing the government's guiding role. We will actively listen to public opinion, gather collective wisdom, and mobilize society's strength to promote the comprehensive development of Macau's social, economic, cultural, and livelihood sectors. I am committed to serving the people, Macau, and the nation with dedication, safeguarding social fairness and justice, and protecting citizens' well-being."
Following the confirmation of the election results, Sam Ho Fai must receive formal appointment by the Central Government. He will officially take office during the Macau handover anniversary in December.
At 62 years old, Sam Ho Fai was born in mainland China and moved to Macau in 1986. Having served as President of the Court of Final Appeal for nearly 25 years since Macau's handover, he is the first Chief Executive not originating from the business sector. His leadership is anticipated to bring a focus on legal and social governance, reflecting his extensive judicial background.
This election marks a significant step in Macau’s development, as the new Chief Executive prepares to address the challenges and opportunities facing the region.
