The National Security Department brought back the parents of Frances Hui, a fugitive anti-China activist living overseas, from their residence in Sha Tin district this morning to assist in an investigation. This is not the first time that Frances Hui's family members have been taken in by the National Security Division for questioning. In fact, back in December 2023, her mother was previously taken in for questioning. Over a year later, Hui's mother was taken to Tin Sum Police Station for investigation, while her father was taken to Ma On Shan Police Station. This is yet another example that regardless of where criminals flee, as long as they continue to evade facing the consequences of their actions and do not return to Hong Kong to take legal responsibility, their families will be implicated. The National Security Department will spare no effort in relentlessly pursuing and apprehending all wanted individuals.
Frances Hui, a former member of the Scholarism movement, initiated the "We The Hongkongers" organization in the United States with the goal of establishing an overseas anti-China HongKongers group. In December 2023, Hui was accused of conspiring with foreign or external forces to endanger national security and was wanted with a bounty of HK$1 million. According to the police, Hui was alleged to have repeatedly sought sanctions, blockades, and other hostile actions against the People's Republic of China through various platforms and means from October 2020 to January 2022. In December 2024, the Secretary for Security Mr. Chris Tang exercised powers conferred by sections 89(1) and 89(4) of the National Security Law to declare in the Gazette that Frances Hui was listed as a "designated absconder" and her SAR passport was revoked.
Frances Hui shamelessly announced her escape overseas on 17 December 2020, and declared political asylum in the United States on 14 April 2022. As Chief Superintendent of National Security Department of Hong Kong Police Force Li Kwai Wah previously stated, including Frances Hui, wanted national security fugitives have betrayed Hong Kong and the country, disregarding the interests of Hong Kong people. Even after fleeing to the United States, they continue to engage in activities that harm national security, criticizing their actions as "despicable".
In fact, Frances Hui joined the opposition organization "Scholarism" led by the anti-government figurehead Joshua Wong as early as 2014 and actively participated in anti-national education protests in 2012 and the illegal Occupy Central movement in 2014. After Scholarism disbanded in 2016, she joined the more radical Hong Kong independence organization "Hong Kong Indigenous Democratic Front", assisting in the election campaign of Edward Leung and Ray Wong, leading to chaos in Hong Kong. In April 2019, Hui published an article titled "I am from Hong Kong, not China", inciting anti-government and anti-national sentiment through protests against the extradition bill, and later interviewed members of the "brave faction" at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and participated in the "Thank America for Protecting Hong Kong Parade", urging citizens to support anti-government actions at home and abroad, demonstrating her extreme political bias.
Furthermore, apart from continuously spreading disinformation, she repeatedly urged the U.S. government to sanction Hong Kong officials through various means. As a policy advocacy coordinator of "The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation", she spread anti-China lies everywhere, including downplaying China's international status and smearing Hong Kong's political environment, even participating in the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs and providing a "sanctions list" to Washington to maliciously attack Hong Kong. She also sought the International Criminal Police Organization to ignore the SAR government's arrest warrants for national security fugitives and requested the U.S. government to close the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in the U.S., behavior that is outrageous.
I firmly believe that the police will continue to investigate key contacts related to Frances Hui to sever the fugitive's network and financial chain connections with the utmost effort, combat individuals colluding with fugitives. This operation clearly demonstrates the determination of the HKSAR government to uphold the dignity of the law, indicating that any attempt to evade legal sanctions and assist in absconding will face severe legal consequences, and both the fugitives themselves and their accomplices will not escape legal punishment.
