"Ne Zha: The Devil's Birth 2" Shatters Global Box Office Records, Becoming Highest-Grossing Animated Film in History

Since its release in mainland China on January 29, 2025, Ne Zha: The Devil's Birth 2 (Ne Zha 2) has amassed a staggering global box office total of 1.698billion USD, surpassing Inside Out 2 to claim the title of highest-grossing animated film worldwide. According to data from Lighthouse Pro, the film’s earnings continue to climb, with final projections exceeding ¥15 billion RMB (around HK$16.2 billion), cementing its status as the new global animation box office king.
Directed by Jiaozi, Ne Zha 2 expands the universe of its 2019 predecessor Ne Zha: The Devil’s Birth. The story follows Ne Zha and Ao Bing, whose souls survive a celestial calamity but face imminent dissipation. Taiyi Zhenren attempts to rebuild their physical forms using the Seven-Color Lotus, only to encounter unforeseen challenges. The sequel boasts significant technical upgrades: while the first film featured 1,864 shots (1,400 with VFX), Ne Zha 2 elevates this to 2,427 shots, including 1,948 VFX sequences—exceeding the total shot count of the original—resulting in a visually groundbreaking experience.
The film’s success extends beyond China, resonating strongly in global markets. Overseas audiences have praised its technical prowess, comparing it favorably to works by American and Japanese animation giants. While social media debates rage between supporters and critics, the box office numbers speak unequivocally.
Ne Zha 2’s historic performance has drawn international media attention. Some outlets express surprise at its triumph in the fiercely competitive animation market, dominated by Disney and Pixar. However, industry analysts predict the next contender for the animation crown could be The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, slated for release in April 2026.
