U.S. President Biden announced that he will withdraw from the presidential election and will not seek re-election, fully supporting Vice President Kamala Harris to represent the Democratic Party in the presidential race.
Biden stated that he believes stepping aside and focusing on fulfilling his presidential duties for the remainder of his term is in the best interest of the Democratic Party and the country. He also called for unity within the Democratic Party to defeat their Republican opponent, former President Trump.
Harris expressed her honor at receiving Biden's support, vowing to win the party's nomination and to do everything possible to unite the Democratic Party and the nation to defeat Trump. She described Biden's decision to withdraw as a continuation of his public service, placing the American people and the country above all else, calling it a selfless and patriotic act.
Reports indicate that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and former President Bill and Hillary Clinton all praised Biden's decision. The Clintons and several Democrats have also expressed support for Harris to represent the Democratic Party in the presidential election. However, Pelosi has yet to indicate whether she supports Harris.
